Pound Ridge, New York
Pound Ridge is located 45 miles northeast of New York City and 19 miles northeast of White Plains. The town spans approximately 22.6 miles. 98.5% of Pound Ridge’s total acreage is zoned for residential use. An elected Supervisor and four elected town board members meet in the Municipal offices located in the Town House at 179 Westchester Avenue, Pound Ridge to conduct the business of the town.

Many historic and wonderfully restored antique colonials decorate this quaint hamlet. The rugged terrain, ranging from steep cliffs to open meadows, has also inspired area architects to create some of the most stunning contemporary homes in northern Westchester County. Scotts Corners provides the economic center for this community. It is dotted with antique stores, specialty shops, small eateries, and its “trademark” street signs direct you though the through-fares. The antique shops attract many visitors yearly. Pound Ridge residents enjoy the idyllic setting and peacefulness that this town offers. The hamlet of Pound Ridge, along Route 124, has been declared a historic district by the Town of Pound Ridge and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The natural beauty of Pound Ridge is visible though its acres and acres of majestic woodlands, it’s rolling hills and steep-walled ravines, its rocky outcroppings and wetlands, its ponds, swamps, marshes and rivers. Many types of homes on large tracts are tucked into the surrounding woodlands.

The first settlements were in the Long Ridge area in 1718, but the community really began in 1743 with the arrival of the Lockwood family. Following the Revolutionary War, Pound Ridge flourished as a basket-making and shoemaking center. The hamlet was dubbed “Basket Town”. Between 1800 and 1860 the town was made up of many hamlets or “corners” as they were called. Some of the names remain in use even today. Postal service began in 1826.

The advent of the railroad attracted wealthy New Yorkers seeking vacation retreats. One of the arrivals was Hiram Halle, who purchased lands and then spent many years remodeling, refurbishing and restoring over 30 buildings in Pound Ridge. He searched the surrounding countryside for buildings. Often, he would dismantle them and move them to Pound Ridge. He tried to reuse all of the parts, even the nails. He either combined parts from one or more houses, or restored the interior of one with bits from another. His purpose was to create a Colonial Revivalist hamlet. The Inn at Pound Ridge was originally a boarding house. Halle renovated it during the 1930’s. It was later turned into an Inn. The Inn has the distinction of greeting 4 United States Presidents: FDR, Truman, Eisenhower and Kennedy.
